Light metering focuses on the brightness of an object and makes brighter objects brighter and darker objects darker. The first picture captured the brightness of the computer and made everything originally darker than the screen even more dark, so you can't really see the person. The second picture captured the brightness of the skin, which then makes everything originally bright even brighter. In the future spot metering can make something visible in bright sunlight.
