Self Portrait

For our Self-Portrait project we were to take three self-portraits. They were all to be in black and white, and they were all to capture a mood of some sort. We were also challenged to be as artistic as possible, and stay as far away from normal, cliche portraits that we see on personal pages etc. as possible. One had to use the rule of thirds as the base for the composition; One had to incorporate leading lines, and one had to be taken from a more extreme angle.

I had the most difficulty with this project. It was not easy to fuse yourself with compositional tricks, contain a mood and, on top of that, you’re not taking the picture. I had no idea how the picture was going to turn out and it became extremely frustrating. My partner sometimes didn’t know what I wanted in my picture and I ended up taking over fifty pictures. I feel a little disappointed because I put a ton of thinking into this project, but I lacked craftsmanship and creativity. We are restricted on ideas like the use silhouettes and we have to show facial expressions. You don’t always have to show your face to express a gloomy or joyous mood; body posture or positions can work the same. The one picture I like the most and I think I did best on was my Rule of Thirds picture. It is in a different position than anyone else and I was wearing black and white to make the contrast stand out; however, next time I would have to change my background because it takes away from the emphasis.

Your portfolio looks awesome Esteban. And, did you change your portrait post? Why do i think you said you despised this project earlier? Thank you for such an honest reflection. I think you did well, but I think you can do better, I don't think you should despise it, you should let it inspire you to great new heights.
